The area

Location and things to do

Seahouses is a bustling fishing village with an attractive harbour on the Northumberland coast, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village has a good range of shops along with inns, pubs and places to eat. Miles of sandy beaches are close by, and boat trips run daily from the harbour to the Farne Islands, home to a seabird sanctuary and a seal colony. There are numerous castles and great houses to explore, including Bamburgh, Cragside and Alnwick, and golf, fishing and riding are available locally.

Beadnell 1.8 miles, Bamburgh 3.5 miles, Alnwick 14.8 miles.

  • Farne Islands boat trips: Boats leave Seahouses harbour for the seabird islands, with puffins from April to late July and grey seals all year. The crossing takes about twenty minutes.
  • Bamburgh Castle: Ten minutes up the coast, standing on its dune ridge above miles of sand. Allow a full morning, and look in at the Grace Darling Museum in the village below.
  • Holy Island of Lindisfarne: The priory ruins, the castle and the harbour make a fine day out. Check the safe crossing times before you set off, as the tidal causeway floods twice a day.
  • Alnwick Castle and Garden: A half hour inland, with the great castle on one side and the water features and poison garden of The Alnwick Garden on the other.
  • Dunstanburgh Castle coastal walk from Craster: Park at Craster, follow the path along the shore and the castle ruins rise ahead of you. One of the finest short walks in Northumberland, with kippers from the smokehouse on the way back.
  • Seahouses harbour: The working heart of the village, with the fishing boats, the trip kiosks and the harbour wall. A good place to eat fish and chips and watch the tide turn.
